About Maleeha Shahid
Maleeha Shahid has been a devoted advocate and community leader in the Town of Whitby for many years, making significant contributions at both the local and regional levels. Maleeha was first elected as a Town of Whitby Councillor in 2018 and in 2022 was elected to serve as a Regional Councillor. She served as Whitby’s Deputy Mayor in 2023 and currently holds the position of Finance and Budget Chair for the Town. Her tenure as a Regional Councillor has been marked by proactive engagement on critical issues, including advocating for a new acute care hospital and modern sports complex, and the removal of tolls on Hwy. 412 and Hwy. 418. Maleeha’s involvement on various boards and committees – such as the Planning and Economic Development Committee, Transit Commission, Durham Region Anti-Racism Taskforce, and the Durham Environmental and Climate Advisory Committee -- demonstrates her multi-faceted approach to community involvement.
Maleeha regularly hosts workshops on pressing like human trafficking, and mental health, demonstrating her commitment to education and awareness. Her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic included organizing virtual sessions on mental health and combating human trafficking, reflecting an innate ability to adapt in the face of evolving challenges. Maleeha is also well-known in the community for her efforts to address local needs and foster a sense of belonging through initiatives like youth development programs, and holiday drives. Maleeha's vision for Whitby is rooted in inclusivity, intersectionality, and empowerment. Through her advocacy, partnerships, and proactive initiatives, she has consistently strived to create a more equitable community.
As a mother of three children, a businesswoman, and a dedicated public servant, her impact extends far beyond her official roles, making her a rare and exceptional leader in municipal politics. In addition to serving her community, Maleeha finds joy and inspiration in literature, writing, and art which reflects her deep appreciation for arts and culture. Maleeha is pursuing a graduate degree through the University of Western Ontario’s Local Government Program, specializing in Public Administration.
